The aftermath of the destruction wrought by Cyclone Idai is resulting in the worst humanitarian crisis in Mozambique’s recent history.

As the Sailors Society are appealing to our loyal supporters to assist us in raising funds as we sent two Chaplains on Wednesday 27th March to assist in the area where inhabitants are in desperate need of basic supplies such as rice, maize and clean water.

The International humanitarian network, on the ground in Mozambique is warning that the full extent of the catastrophe will take days to become clear.  And while there are many international humanitarian aid organisations on the ground and still more mobilising, we know that it simply will not be enough. Every small bit helps.

We also understand that Beira and surrounds basically need to be re-built and that the aid relief will need to flow for many months. Beira is the fourth largest city in Mozambique. It lies in the central region of the country in Sofala Province, where the Pungwe River meets the Indian Ocean.

The Sailors’ Society ‘s two Chaplains are trained in Crisis response with the aim of working in conjunction with LBH to establish immediate assistance to those affected the most mainly in the Port of Beira. We would specifically be assisting with emotional support with those that have been left traumatised with losing families and their homes. We will also provide basic food supplies and clean water.

We are appealing to our loyal supporters to assist us in raising funds.

As Beira is completely cut off by road,  a rescue helicopter, landing craft and small vessel are being used  to get aid to the city. All basic supplies are needed.
